Liguori Golf Tournament in 4th Year
by HAL BOCK AP
Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) --

Cancer touched sports broadcaster Ann Liguori early in life and left a lasting impression. First, her father got the disease when she was a junior in college. ''Then, a year-and-half later, my 22-year-old brother got leukemia,'' she said. It was a double-barreled jolt for a 21-year-old woman just beginning her career. And it is one of the reasons Liguori runs a celebrity golf tournament each year to benefit the American Cancer Society.

The fourth annual event will be held Monday at the Westhampton Country Club on Long Island and, as usual, it is a sellout with 150 golfers set to play. Included in the field is a roster of sports figures like longtime major league pitcher Tommy John, 1987 Super Bowl MVP Ottis Anderson and linebacker Michael Strahan of the New York Giants. Liguori spends much of the year organizing the event, pulling together sponsors and participants. And every so often she gets a reminder of why she's doing it. ''It's so much work and it's draining,'' she said, ''And then, all of a sudden, I hear somebody else, a friend, a relative of a friend, gets cancer. It just hits you. ''You're feeling good, raising money for the society, and then somebody close to you gets it. It reaffirms why we're doing this.''

Liguori has little trouble attracting athletes to participate. ''We always talk about the negatives, but there are a lot of good guys out there,'' she said. Frank Vuono, president of 16W Marketing, knows what she means. He was one of the founders of the NFL Quarterbacks Club, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year by establishing a foundation as its umbrella charity. An alarming number of NFL quarterbacks like Doug Flutie, Boomer Esiason, Jim Kelly, Mark Rypien and Dan Marino have been touched by the tragedy of sometimes life-threatening illnesses afflicting their children.

"Ann has walked more golf courses with pros and would-be golfers than any other woman I know. She continues to promote the game by highlighting the personal side of the people who love it." -Amy Grant
